Leo Rising & The Sun
I consider Leo rising the “Barbie placement.” Please don’t freak out! I say this because there is a warmth to Leo risings that doesn’t stop at the individual. Just like the Sun (the planet ruling their Ascendant sign), they bring light and life to their surroundings. They are able to illuminate others, as the Sun illuminates our world. In many cases, this makes Leo rising people the ones who make us feel seen and appreciated. For some people, of course, being seen is uncomfortable, or causes them to recoil. And it’s true, sometimes the Sun burns too hot or bright for us to know what to do with. Sometimes, Leo risings struggle to see things through any perspective other than their own; after all, the Sun is the central organizing body of the solar system. But the way that a Leo rising and their loved ones experience this will depend heavily on what sign the Sun is in the native’s chart.
–with the Sun in Virgo: This person will be more on the reserved side for Leo risings. They shine through their ability to make themselves valuable wherever they go. To these individuals, information is like currency; they notice the smallest details and can use them to produce tangible tools, systems, or routines which allows them to make the lives of others easier. Their pride comes from their resourcefulness, wittiness, and technical skill.
–with the Sun in Libra: The Sun is in fall in the sign of Libra, which means it is uncomfortable here; this can make this kind of Leo rising feel a bit less energetically resourced in their physical body, or produce some discomfort with their appearance or confidence. They derive a big part of their identity from their local environment – think: being a regular at their neighborhood diner and coffee spot, their relationships with siblings or cousins, the local religious community they’re part of, their run club, their poetry Twitter account, etc. At times, it can feel like the people in these communities are the channel through which a Leo rising person with the Sun in Libra develops a sense of self-understanding. We can see how the debilitated Sun relies on other people to shore up their own identity and sense of self. However, this can be used quite beautifully when the native aligns themselves with communities that reflect their values.
–with the Sun in Scorpio: This Leo rising is able to maintain a sense of mystery about them despite the fact that they are Sun-ruled. Natives with the Sun in Scorpio are very private; their home and family lives are rich and complex, and you may never learn about the depths of this part of their lives. They are warm without over-sharing; they are generous without revealing more than they want to; they are calculating and ready to defend themselves or their loved ones the moment things get weird. They might use humor as a way to connect with others without ever having to share information or connections that make them vulnerable.
–with the Sun in Sagittarius: This person’s double fire energy makes them the life of the party. They are here for a good time, and feel energized by sharing their wisdom with others. They want to learn who they are through direct experience, and those experiences usually entail fun – a creative endeavor, a connection to children and young people, or simply a lively fathering. These Leo risings may struggle to know when enough is enough, though; always wanting to give more of themselves to whatever they do or whoever they feel they can inspire.
–with the Sun in Capricorn: Leo risings with their Sun in Capricorn have an interesting tension between wanting to be seen and wanting to put their head down and get shit done. Their warmth and inclusivity is constrained by their desire to do rather than simply relish in being. Capricorns with Leo rising find a major area of their focus in life is drawn to the nitty-gritty parts of life – their daily work, their health, the care-taking of self and others than makes life sustainable. While this looks very different from the bright and gregarious sign of Leo, there is a shared theme of wanting things to last in both of these signs. The Leo rising with their Sun in Capricorn is less likely to think that everything revolves around them because they are consistently engaged in actions that build long-lasting sustainability for not just themselves but the institutions they are part of – whether that be their family, their religion, their company, or something else.
–with the Sun in Aquarius: Leo risings with the Sun in Aquarius are ruled by a Sun as far from its place of domicile as possible – like Libra Suns, Aquarius Suns are not comfortable in this sign. This is the sign of mid-winter; it is diametrically opposed to the steady heat of Leo. These people are likely to define themselves through their close relationships with others, but these relationships might be more intellectual or philosophical than embodied, which can make it tricky for this combination to feel at home in their own skin. Despite how important these relationships are for the native’s self-image, they may spend more of their time defining themselves against these people rather than identifying with them.
–with the Sun in Pisces: Leo risings with the Sun in Pisces diffuse a soft glow rather than shine a harsh light. They are attuned to the ephemeral and immaterial parts of life that are felt and intuited rather than explained or rationalized. They shine in their ability to show up in a crisis. They may identify heavily with their ability to access the feelings of others without being told directly, or with the relationship to emotional power dynamics that may have run as a theme throughout their lives.
–with the Sun in Aries: The philosophers who cut to the chase, Leo risings with the Sun in Aries identify strongly with their beliefs and value systems, and are unashamed to share that with the world. The Sun is exalted in Aries and in the house of its joy here, so they have a very well-resourced Sun – think, comfort in being who you are, willingness to say it with your chest, a desire to be seen for the natural gifts that you offer. This can, of course, be uncomfortable for others bearing witness to such ease, if those others are not able to access this ease themselves. However, these individuals can be a huge source of inspiration for others. They shine when they preach their ideals, when they connect with others who are different, and when they can integrate differences into their own system of thought and belief. They are natural teachers and thought leaders.
–with the Sun in Taurus: These individuals get what they want – and what they want is for everyone, especially themselves, to feel good. What is good? Nothing fancy, necessarily – fed, well-rested, and at a point of stability that allows them to actually relax and enjoy life’s simple pleasures. They have all the warmth you associate with Leo, but it’s in no rush. Leo risings with the Sun in Taurus are patient; they let others come to them – and there is no need to doubt that they will! These people are driven to create safety and stability in the lives of others, and it’s important for them to feel recognized for this.
–with the Sun in Gemini: The life of the groupchat, the friend who “has a guy” for whatever you might need, Leo risings with the Sun in Gemini are happy to draw attention to themselves for their intellect and wit, their varied interests, or to just let their friend group speak for itself. These people shine particularly when they are making connections for others, bridging social circles or putting a friend or colleague in touch with someone who they think would complete their project, gab with them about their shared niche interest, or help them become famous.
–with the Sun in Cancer: These Leo risings will be much more quiet and reserved than the typical Leo rising. With their ruling planet in the 12th house and in a water sign, they are going to shine in unexpected ways, and more likely than not, when they are behind-the-scenes or in private. This person’s warmth comes from their sensitive nature and their creativity. They may struggle with wanting to be seen and not feeling like it’s natural for them to draw attention to themselves; they may go about seeking attention or visibility in a sideways manner, rather than directly proclaiming themselves.
–with the Sun in Leo: Hello! These people are highly visible in their personal lives. Their sense of self is a matter of great importance to them – building and defining their identity over time feels like a central task to their lives, not something that just happens along the way. When the Sun is in the sign of Leo for a Leo rising, there is a flow between how they present themselves to the world and how they see themselves. They accept that to be is central to life, before doing or thinking or expressing. This comfort with existence extends to those around them, making others feel more confident, more at ease, and more willing to express themselves than they might normally.
